CTP Insurance by State

Compulsory Third Party works differently everywhere. What you need, and when it has to be in place.

Compulsory Third Party insurance covers injury to people. It does not cover your vehicle, anyone else’s vehicle, or any property. Every registered vehicle in Australia must have it, and the way you get it differs in every state.

The one that catches people: New South Wales. Your CTP — a Green Slip — is bought separately from an insurer before you can register. Turn up to register without one and you will be turning around. Every other state and territory bundles it into the registration transaction in some form.

How it works, state by state

State Called How you get it
NSW Green Slip Separately, before registering. You choose from licensed insurers and prices vary, so it is worth comparing.
VIC TAC charge Included in the registration fee. Single scheme, nothing to arrange.
QLD CTP Included in registration, but you nominate which licensed insurer.
SA CTP Included in registration. Insurer allocated or selected at renewal.
WA Motor Injury Insurance Included in registration through a single scheme.
TAS MAIB premium Included in registration through a single scheme.
NT MACA Included in registration through a single scheme.
ACT CTP Included in registration, with a choice of licensed insurers.

What CTP does not do

This is the misunderstanding worth clearing up. CTP is not car insurance. It does not cover:

  • Damage to your own vehicle
  • Damage to anyone else’s vehicle or property
  • Theft, fire, hail or storm
  • Your vehicle while it is being transported on a truck

For that last one, while your vehicle is on our deck, our goods-in-transit cover applies, not your CTP and not usually your comprehensive policy. Worth reading what that covers before you book anything with anyone.

Moving states

When you re-register interstate, your old CTP ends with your old registration and you are generally entitled to a pro-rata refund of the unused portion. It is not automatic. You have to cancel and claim it. People routinely leave a few hundred dollars behind here.

Rules, premiums and insurer lists change. Confirm the current position with the registration authority in your destination state before you act. This page is a map of what to ask about, not a substitute for asking.
