What It Costs

Real price ranges for every corridor we run, what moves the number up or down, and why a quote that looks too cheap usually is.

Most transport companies will not publish a price. We will. Not because our numbers are magic, but because the vagueness in this industry is doing real damage to people planning a move around a figure nobody will commit to.

Here is what interstate vehicle transport actually costs in Australia, what moves the number, and why the cheapest quote you receive is often the most expensive one you end up paying.

The per-kilometre reality

Across the Australian market, interstate car transport sits at roughly $0.45 to $0.70 per kilometre for a standard sedan. Long depot-to-depot runs land at the bottom of that band. Urgent, remote, enclosed or door-to-door work sits at the top.

That range is wide because the cost is not really about distance. It is about how full the truck is and how far it deviates from a route it was running anyway. A car going Sydney to Melbourne on a truck that already had a gap is cheap. The same car going to a property two hours off the highway is not.

Prices by corridor

Indicative starting prices for a standard sedan, depot-to-depot, one way, including GST.

Corridor Distance Transit Mode From
Sydney to Melbourne 880 km 1–3 business days Road $460
Sydney to Brisbane 920 km 1–3 business days Road $470
Melbourne to Brisbane 1,700 km 2–5 business days Road $690
Melbourne to Adelaide 730 km 1–3 business days Road $390
Sydney to Adelaide 1,400 km 2–4 business days Road $650
Sydney to Canberra 285 km 1–2 business days Road $290

Sydney to Perth 4,000 km 7–14 business days Rail $1,290
Brisbane to Perth 4,300 km 8–14 business days Rail $1,490

Sydney to Gold Coast 850 km 1–3 business days Road $450
Perth to Darwin 4,000 km 10–16 business days Road $1,690

These are starting points, not quotes. A real price depends on the vehicle, both addresses, and which departure you take. What we will not do is quote low to win the booking and re-rate you later.

What pushes the price up

Factor Rough effect Why
Door-to-door instead of depot +20–40% The truck leaves the freight route twice, and a driver spends time on suburban streets
SUV, 4WD or ute +10–25% Takes more deck height and mass than a sedan, so fewer units fit on the truck
Enclosed transport 1.5–2× A sealed trailer carries far fewer vehicles for the same trip
Oversize accessories Varies Bull bars, lift kits, roof racks, trays and canopies all change the footprint
Non-runner Flat surcharge Needs a winch and a truck configured for it
Express or fixed date Varies You are buying priority over other freight, which costs us too
Regional or remote delivery Varies Distance off the corridor, and often a lower-frequency service
December and January Peak rates Everybody moves at once and capacity runs out

What brings it down

  • Depot-to-depot. If you live near a capital and can spare an hour at each end, this is the single biggest saving available.
  • Flexible dates. Telling us “any time in the next three weeks” lets us put you on a run with a gap. A fixed date means we build the run around you.
  • More than one vehicle. Per-vehicle pricing drops sharply for the second and third unit on the same truck.
  • Booking early. Not a discount as such, but late bookings get whatever capacity is left, which is rarely the cheapest.
  • Accepting rail on the long hauls. Perth and Darwin by rail is considerably cheaper than road. It is slower. If you are not in a hurry, take the saving.

Why the cheapest quote often is not

Most companies quoting you for interstate transport do not own a truck. They take your booking, post the job to a load board, and wait for a carrier to accept it. That model produces two specific problems, and both cost you money.

The quote is an estimate, not a price. If no carrier picks the job up at that rate, it gets re-listed higher, and you are asked for more, often once your move is already locked in and you have no leverage.

Nobody has committed to a date. A job sitting unaccepted on a load board is a job not moving. This is where the six-week delivery stories come from. Have a look at the reviews for any transport company you are considering and count how many mention a vehicle sitting in a depot.

The question worth asking any carrier. “Do you own the truck my car will travel on, and can you give me a departure date today?” If the answer is vague on either, you are talking to a broker. That is not automatically disqualifying, but you should know, and you should price the risk in.

What our price includes

  • A named departure date at booking
  • The price held for 30 days: no fuel levy added later, no re-rate once the vehicle is loaded
  • Goods-in-transit cover for the whole journey
  • A photographed condition report at collection, signed by both parties
  • The same report repeated at delivery and compared against collection
  • A call ahead of delivery so nobody waits around
  • Our own truck and our own employed driver
  • Balance settled on delivery, not before

When to book

When you are moving Book ahead by
East coast, off-peak 1–2 weeks
Perth, Darwin or Tasmania 3–4 weeks. These run weekly, so missing a departure costs you seven days
December and January 4–6 weeks. December fills first, every year, without exception
Northern routes in the wet (Nov–Apr) Allow buffer: flooding closes the Stuart and Victoria highways most seasons

Want the actual number for your move? Send us the route and the vehicle. We come back with a fixed price and a real departure date, usually the same business day. If another operator is genuinely cheaper for what you need, we will tell you that too.
