You are moving states. There is a house at both ends, a settlement date that has already moved once, a removalist to book, possibly a school term to work around, and somewhere in the middle of all that, one or two cars that need to get there.

The bit that catches people

Vehicle transport is usually the last thing booked and the first thing to become urgent, because most people assume it works like a removalist. It does not. Removalists come to you on a date you choose. Vehicle carriers run scheduled corridors, and on the long runs those depart weekly.

Miss a Perth departure and you have lost seven days before the car has moved at all. That is where most of the horror stories come from, not incompetence, just someone booking three days out on a corridor that runs once a week.

What we would actually suggest

• Book the vehicle before the removalist. Trucks for furniture are far easier to come by than a slot on a rail service to Perth.
• Two cars go on one truck. The second vehicle costs substantially less than the first. Most of what you pay for is the trip, not the car.
• Send the car early and fly. Driving Sydney to Perth costs four days, fuel, accommodation and four thousand kilometres of wear. It is rarely cheaper once you count it honestly.
• If the dates do not line up, we can hold the vehicle at the destination depot until you are ready. That is the settlement-gap problem and it is extremely common.

The order that works

1. Confirm your settlement or lease dates, even approximately
2. Get a vehicle transport quote: held for 30 days, so it is safe to do early
3. Book the vehicle, especially if you are heading to Perth, Darwin or Tasmania
4. Book the removalist
5. Arrange the inspection and registration once the car has arrived
