What your vehicle class actually costs

Price tracks deck space and mass, not glamour. A truck has a fixed number of positions and a legal mass limit, so a vehicle that takes more of either costs more.

The accessories that change the number

These matter more than people expect, because they change the vehicle’s height envelope: and height determines which deck position it can take.

• Lift kits: even a two-inch lift can push a 4WD out of an upper-deck position
• Roof racks, roof baskets, rooftop tents: a rooftop tent is often the single biggest factor
• Bull bars and rear bars: add length as well as mass
• Trays and canopies: change both height and length on a ute
• Snorkels and aerials: usually fine, occasionally not
• Oversize tyres: small effect, but it compounds with a lift

Preparing the car

• Around a quarter tank of fuel
• Personal belongings removed, not covered by transit insurance
• Aftermarket alarm disabled, or the code given to us
• Existing damage photographed by you, as well as by us
• Clean enough that the condition report is meaningful, and if it is heading to Western Australia, clean underneath too
