December Booking & Christmas Cut-Offs

December is the busiest four weeks of the year in Australian vehicle transport, every year, without exception. Capacity runs out, and no amount of goodwill creates another truck.

Why December is different

Four things land in the same fortnight:

• The residential moving peak. Leases and settlements cluster around the end of the calendar year.
• The Defence posting cycle. A very large number of ADF families move in December and January.
• Holiday vehicle movement: cars and vans going to holiday houses and to the north for the dry.
• Reduced operating days. Public holidays, depot closures and driver leave cut available days sharply.

Demand rises and capacity falls in the same three weeks. That is the whole story.

When to book

If you have left it late

Not hopeless, but be realistic and flexible:

• Take depot-to-depot. It is easier to fit into a full run than door-to-door, and it is cheaper.
• Widen your date range. “Any time in these two weeks” gets you on a truck. A single fixed day may not.
• Consider early January. The first fortnight after New Year is materially quieter than the last fortnight of December.
• Ask about express. It exists for exactly this, though we will tell you honestly if even that will not make your date.

January

The back half of January picks up again with the Defence posting cycle and university intake. If your move is in that window, treat it as a peak too rather than assuming the rush is over.
