Oversize Loads & Permits

What triggers a permit, what pilot vehicles cost you in time, and why your dimensions must be exact.

Once a load exceeds standard dimension or mass limits it needs a permit, and the permit determines the route. This is the one category where a rough guess genuinely costs you a week.

Three numbers decide everything

  • Height: decides which bridges and overpasses are available, and therefore the route
  • Width: decides whether pilot vehicles are required and whether travel is restricted to certain hours
  • Mass: decides the trailer configuration and which roads can legally carry the combination

Take these from the compliance plate or the manufacturer’s specification, not from memory or a tape measure held approximately. A wrong figure produces a wrong permit, and a wrong permit means the movement does not happen.

What a permit involves

Element What it means for you
Application Lodged with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator or the relevant state authority. We handle it.
Lead time Days to weeks depending on the route and how many road managers must consent. This is the main reason oversize is not a same-week booking.
Route Specified in the permit. Not a suggestion: deviating from it voids the permit.
Travel hours Often restricted. Wide loads are commonly barred from peak periods and sometimes from night travel.
Pilot vehicles Required above certain widths and lengths, and they are an additional cost that scales with distance.
Signage and lighting Warning signs, flags and lights to specification.

Chain of Responsibility

Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law, everyone in the supply chain carries a duty: not just the driver. That includes the party consigning the load.

In practice: the dimensions and mass you give us are not merely a quoting detail, they are a compliance matter. We will ask you to confirm them, and that is why. If you are not certain, say so and we will measure.

Preparing machinery

  • Attachments removed or fully lowered: buckets, forks, tynes, blades
  • Booms and masts retracted and secured
  • Articulation locks engaged where fitted
  • Fluids checked. A leaking machine will not be loaded
  • Loose tools and gear out of cabs and toolboxes
  • Tracks, buckets and cavities cleaned of soil: mandatory for anything crossing into Western Australia, and taken seriously at every state border for machinery

Sometimes it is cheaper driven

A registered, roadworthy light truck or bus on a sealed corridor is frequently better off with a driver in it than on a low loader. We will price both and tell you which we would do. Once it is unregistered, oversize or genuinely slow, carrying wins.
