Wet Season Transport in Northern Australia
November to April, the roads that close, and how to plan a northern move around it.
Between roughly November and April, northern Australia gets weather that closes highways for days at a time. Any operator who quotes you a guaranteed Darwin delivery date in February is either not thinking about it or not being straight with you.
What actually happens
Monsoonal rain causes riverine flooding across the Top End, the Kimberley and northern Queensland. The consequence for freight is that single-carriageway highways with limited detour options go under, and there is no alternative route. These are not roads with a parallel option twenty kilometres away.

Cyclones are a separate problem
Cyclone season overlaps the wet across northern WA, the Territory and the Queensland coast. When a system is tracking, ports close, services suspend and vehicles are held at the nearest safe depot. That is a safety decision and it is not negotiable, but it can add a week.
How we handle it
- We quote a realistic window, not an optimistic one. The buffer is built into the figure you are given, rather than explained to you on day nine.
- We tell you at booking if your corridor is exposed and roughly what that means.
- We hold vehicles at the nearest depot rather than pushing into a closure. Insurance continues while held.
- We publish closures on our network status page as they happen.
Planning a northern move between November and April? Build genuine slack into your dates. A fortnight, not two days. If your date is immovable, tell us at quote stage and we will be honest about whether it is achievable rather than take the booking and hope.
The dry season is not automatically easy
May to October is faster and more predictable, but it is also when the entire grey nomad migration moves north, and northern corridors run weekly rather than daily. Book ahead in the dry for capacity reasons rather than weather ones.
