Interstate Car Transport
The whole picture — corridors, modes, transit windows and what determines your price.
The whole picture: how vehicles actually move between Australian states, what determines your price, and which service suits your situation. If you are not sure where to start, start here.
Australia is not a road-only market
This surprises people, and it is the single biggest thing to understand about moving a vehicle across this country. Not everything travels on a truck the whole way.
| Mode | Where | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Road | The east coast triangle — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane — plus Adelaide and most regional runs | Most frequent and most flexible. Daily on the busy corridors. |
| Rail | East coast to Perth, and Adelaide to Darwin | Considerably cheaper across the Nullarbor and up the Track. Slower, and weekly rather than daily. |
| Sea | Tasmania, across Bass Strait | Unavoidable. There is no other way. Ferry schedules govern the timing. |
Most vehicles going to Perth travel by rail for the long middle section, with road at each end. That is not a downgrade. It is why a Sydney to Perth move costs what it does rather than double.
The two decisions that set your price
1. Door-to-door or depot-to-depot
Depot is 20 to 40 per cent cheaper and costs you an hour at each end. If you live near a capital and have a spare driver, take the saving. If you are mid-move with no capacity, door-to-door earns its premium.
2. Open or enclosed
Open carrier is the default and the right answer for almost every vehicle. Enclosed costs one and a half to two times as much and is genuinely worth it for restorations, low-clearance cars and fresh paint. For a daily driver, it is money spent on nothing.
How long it takes
Transit time is measured from loading, not from when you booked. The other half of the equation is departure frequency, and that is where the real waiting happens.
East coast corridors run daily, so booking to delivery is usually under a week. Perth, Darwin and Tasmania run weekly or twice weekly. Miss a departure and you have lost seven days before the vehicle has moved at all. This is exactly what the “my car sat in a depot for weeks” reviews are describing.
Ask any carrier for a departure date, not a transit time. A transit time with no departure attached to it tells you nothing. If they cannot give you a date, your job is probably sitting on a load board waiting for someone to accept it.
Before you book anything
- Going to WA? Read the quarantine checklist. A dirty undercarriage means a cleaning fee, a re-inspection fee and lost days.
- Moving states permanently? Check the registration rules for your destination: the inspection requirements and timeframes vary a lot, and Victoria’s are the toughest.
- Moving in December or January? Book four to six weeks out. It fills every year without exception.
- Vehicle modified or not running? Say so at quote stage. It changes which truck we send, not whether we take the job.
