Grey Nomads & Travellers

Drive north for the dry, spend a few months where the weather is decent, then fly home and have the van and the car freighted back. It is one of the most common movements on our network, and it is intensely seasonal.

The season is the whole story

In those windows the northern corridors fill, and they do not run daily to begin with. Book six to eight weeks ahead in peak and it is straightforward. Book two weeks ahead and you may be waiting for the following departure, which on the Track can mean a fortnight.

One-way is normal here

Most transport pricing assumes a return leg. Grey nomad movement rarely has one. You drove up and you are flying home. We run these corridors on a schedule regardless, so a one-way van is freight on a truck that was going anyway, not a special trip.

Van and car together

Almost everyone moves both. Sent together they are quoted as one job, they travel on the same service, and they arrive at the same time. Sent separately they cost more and arrive on different days, which helps nobody.

Preparing the van

• Empty the water tanks: mass, and a half-full tank is a moving load
• Gas bottles turned off, disconnected and secured
• Awning retracted and locked, hatches and door secured
• Everything inside stowed properly: loose items become projectiles
• Photograph the interior as well as the exterior
